In 2020, the world of yoga changed overnight. The immediate demand for online yoga classes emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic, which in turn created a need for online teacher training—training on best teaching practices in the online world, as well as an understanding of the nervous system and solutions rooted in science.

It was at this inflection point that The School of Yoga Sequencing was founded. And it was uniquely poised to meet this moment. 

The true origin story goes back to 2009, when Hayley Winter established The Institute of Yoga Sports Science® (YSS). YSS is the leader in combining the worlds of yoga and sport, pioneering sports-specific yoga teacher training that incorporates biomechanics and movement science. The YSS global student roster includes yoga teachers, physiotherapists, strength and conditioning coaches, and fitness professionals, including Olympic athletes.

YSS forged a partnership with its student body, conducting a 7-year case study research program collecting data on the correlation between yoga and improved athletic performance, including injury prevention. Advanced Yoga Sports Coaches™ is the largest research database in the world demonstrating the efficacy of yoga in sport. In addition to leading research and training at the intersection of yoga and sport, YSS was the first to conduct online courses for yoga teachers. 

With 15+ years of embracing new technologies in online teaching, Hayley’s expertise was sought after during the pandemic as yoga teachers, studios, and companies sought to rapidly transfer their courses online. In partnership with the Yoga Alliance and British Wheel of Yoga, Hayley conducted a 5,000-person teacher training workshop to quickly prepare students to teach online. The robust exchange in the Q&A sessions revealed teaching gaps and exposed data around underlying support teachers need in developing sequencing solutions rooted in knowledge of biomechanics and movement science.

The School of Yoga Sequencing bridges these gaps by bringing the science, the art and research of YSS to all yoga teachers worldwide. The Yoga Sequencing Solution, the bespoke methodology developed by Hayley and Annelize, is now available via online courses and a playbook. It is for teachers who want to develop intentional and innovative sequences for their students of all ages and abilities, athletes as well as the general public. Solutions that streamline classes, build confidence, and enjoy greater results for teachers and their students.
